What is the traditional clothing for Malays?
The Baju Melayu is the traditional men clothing in Malaysia where it is commonly worn by the Malays. It is the Malay word for ‘Malay Shirt’ and depending which state you are looking at, they have a different way of wearing the Baju Melayu. Fundamentally, it consists of a shirt and pants with the ‘Samping’ which is usually made of songket or kain sarung as a wraparound. The Baju Melayu is considered as an official attire where leaders wear them during public ceremonies while it is also worn by people from other races. Most people will wear the Baju Melayu with a songkok to complete the attire.
Types of Baju Kurung
The Baju Kurung is the Malay attire worn by women. It is considered as an official attire where women wear them during occasions as well as for work. There are several types of Baju Kurung where among the most popular ones include the Teluk Belanga, which is also known as the Johor Baju Kurung. This is the most common type of Baju Kurung where it consists of a long blouse and a long dress. The Baju Kurung Cekak Musang is another type where it is similar to the Teluk Belanga wxcept that it has a musang neck collar. Another popular type is the Baju Kurung Kedah which is known to have come from southern Thailand.
